Who is Jason Osipa?

Owner and Director of Osipa Entertainment, Jason is an 11-year veteran of 3D production. His unique career experience holding roles in all aspects of 3D production, has resulted in an ability to predict and prepare for the way any idea or technology will ripple forwards and backwards through a pipeline.

Character Technical Director

From creating, and being the first to hold, the title of TD at Mainframe Entertainment, to most recently being Senior Character TD at LucasArts, Jason has lead character TD teams on games and television, working with complicated feature-rich rigs that are allowed to update at their own speed, all the way down to bare-bones rigs that need to run at 60fps.

Animator

Jason has been animating in 3D since 1997, holding titles of Senior Animator and Supervisor Animator on projects ranging from games to television to film tests, from hyper-real to cartoony.

Modeler

Modeling characters and props has been a part of Jason's skillset ever since starting TD work. The need to better understand character deformation immediately pushed upstream to modeling, and learning to focus on silhouette and edge flow for animation.

Lighting and Shading TD

Providing clients a unique, focused view on what is essential in portraying human emotion, specializing in skin, eye and all human-type shaders brings a level of believability not found too readily.

Author

Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right! first hit shelves in June 2003 and quickly scored and maintained a 5-star amazon rating. Covering animation, modeling and rigging for animation, as well as a theory encompassing those, Stop Staring is accessible yet expert. More recently, we released a second edition improving the art, dramatically updating the rigging process, and added a "Squash & Stretch" chapter.

Mad Scientist

Often, Jason's work doesn't neatly fit well into an existing title. Some ideas, like effective blends, are a compression and authoring technique to get more blend shapes for fewer values in a runtime engine, whereas Procedural Awareness is a system Jason designed for EA to layer in automatic, dynamic character moods driven by their surroundings. Mad Scientists do weird stuff like that, right?
